Walking in the footsteps of Michelangelo : The Vatican Gardens, Rome

I’m following the footsteps of the Modernists and Renaissance painters by going to paint in the places where these art history icons worked and made work. I have painted numerous places in Europe. Some have been owned by family or by friends that I’ve known for a very long time.

My current series of works started in the Flint Hills of Kansas and then on to Montell, Texas which is close to Uvalde. In Montell I painted a work called “Ofrenda” which was shown at The Sheen Center in January 2023 as part of a group show “An American Dream” I curated.

I will be painting outside of the Vatican Walls en plein air, and inside the gardens I will be drawing and making studies. On this day trip to the Vatican gardens I was walking in the footsteps of great artists like Michelangelo and Raphael who painted in the Vatican City. My mother and father were with me and it was a very special time.

In Lacoste I will also be painting in the footsteps in Europe of Pierre Bonnard, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cezzane, Claude Monet and Daniel Burin. While in Europe I will be painting at the cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence that Brunelleschi and Ghiberti designed.  The Florentine Duomo has been a repeated and predominant theme in my painting career since I first painted it when I was a student attending Santa Reparata International School of the Arts in Florence, which I will also be visiting.

In short, I go to paint.
